Performance Evaluation of Household Li-Ion Battery Storage Systems
The increase in electricity prices along with a decrease in the price of storage systems has led to a rapid expansion of the PV-battery storage system market in German households. In order to be economically viable, PV-storage systems must fulfil certain performance criteria, and the system control strategies as well as the control speed have a large impact on the overall system performance. While the system control software should be regulated in such a way as to maximize the self-supply ratio as well as the battery lifetime, the control speed and strategy has a direct influence on the self-supply ratio and as a consequence on the overall self-sufficiency. An intelligent control strategy also has added benefits for the grid operator. Several commercially available PV-battery systems have been analyzed with respect to these specific performance criteria. The test results presented here provide a representative picture of the current status of the storage system market and offer useful pointers for future system development.
