Progress on Erbium-Doped Fluorozirconate Glasses for Upconversion-Based Solar Cells
Er-doped ZBLAN glasses emit intense upconverted fluorescence in the visible and near infrared spectral range when illuminated with a 1540 nm laser diode. These emissions can be excited by a 2-photon upconversion process (near infrared) and a 3-photon upconversion process (visible). For low excitation powers of a few mW the main upconverted fluorescence can be attributed to the 2-photon upconversion emitting at 980 nm. For increasing excitation power the contribution of the 2-photon upconversion to the overall emission decreases, while the contribution of the 3-photon upconversion increases. It was found that the power dependence of the integrated intensity, normalized to the excitation power, shows a maximum for all samples at different Er-doping levels. This maximum shifts to smaller excitation power for higher Er-doping levels.
