A large number of grid connected photovoltaic (PV) systems is generating environment-friendly electricity in Europe today. Most of these systems use crystalline solar modules of silicon, which are well researched and have been observed in operation for more than 30 years. At present a continuous increase can be seen of the installed capacity of PV systems globally, and the rate of PV systems using CdTe or CIS solar modules is growing. However, we still know too little about the aging of such thin-film PV systems and about their operational behavior under real environmental conditions during a long running time. This paper presents the results of a long-term research project in which we have been observing and checking the operational behavior and long-term performance of a CIS PV system for more than six years.
