HelioSphera SA produces 1.42 m2 Micromorph® tandem solar cells manufactured on equipment provided by Oerlikon Solar. These cells combine the advantages of amorphous silicon, such us high absorption at the visible range, with the stability and spectral sensitivity at long wavelengths of microcrystalline silicon. Photovoltaic modules are expected to maintain power output within acceptable limits over a period of 25 years and beyond. To meet these challenging lifetime requirements, Heliosphera SA is continuously looking for new cost effective approaches in collaboration with material suppliers. Encapsulant materials must provide protection and electrical isolation of the PV module components from the environment. DuPont Photovoltaic Encapsulant Solutions introduced new innovative encapsulants for PV applications such as DuPont PV5300 sheets based on Ionomer technology. This paper discusses the use of high performance, cost-effective materials like Ionomer encapsulants which will improve cell life and maintain cell efficiency.
