A higher degree of electricity system flexibility will be necessary to accommodate higher shares of photovoltaic (PV) generation in Great Britain in coming decades. In this study, the impact of distributed PV generation at a local level is calculated across Great Britain (GB), using a novel framework (UKPVD) based on publicly available, real data on PV deployment, local demand and grid assets across GB. Data available at a lower level super output area (LSOA, ~600-households) resolution on PV deployment, electricity meter density, domestic and nondomestic electricity demand and local network assets are used to generate representative local electricity networks. PV growth scenarios are applied to these networks, and used to determine where network impacts are expected to occur at a low voltage (LV) distribution level using a geographical information system (GIS) mapping approach. The same approach is used to determine where best to implement flexibility measures, both from both a technical and an economic perspective. The study aims to provide a realistic and geographically granular picture of embedded PV impacts on the LV distribution network across different areas in the GB and it provides a first-of-its-kind level of accuracy in definition of representative contexts for modelling of distribution network impacts. This approach is schematised in Figure 1.
