In 2020, Honduras was the country with the highest penetration of solar energy in its electricity matrix. Moreover, the Honduran power system is interconnected with other countries in the Central American region, with a common regional market. On the other hand, the Honduran electricity system has a high impedance and low inertia. The conditions described above make this country an interesting case study to analyse the behaviour of a weak power grid with a high penetration of solar photovoltaic energy. This paper briefly discusses these conditions and analyses an event where a blackout occurs in Nicaragua due to the shutdown of several PV plants in Honduras. This paper also explores a solution that avoids the blackout by integrating distributed storage. The analysis and proposed solution are performed using a model of the Central American electricity grid developed using ETAP software.
