Abstract/Summary:


High efficiency solar cells such as TANDEM solar cells, Intermediate Band (IB) solar cells are mainly fabricated from III-V compound semiconductors which are suitable for concentrated sunlight. They are good candidates to collect direct sunlight from line concentrator with a linear type Fresnel lens. In order to simultaneously collect diffused sunlight under the focusing lens, commercially available standard Si solar cells are fixed on both side of the focusing line with a tilt angle of 60° to the planes of both Fresnel lens and of high efficiency solar cells on the focal line. In our preliminary experiment using 1 cm² calibrated solar cell and 100 cm² standard solar cell for field test in cloudy sky in Bangkok where direct to diffused sunlight ratio is 50:50 on the average, it is found that the proposed PV system with line concentration ratio of 10-100 suns can provides more power output up to 50-100% of normal operation at 1 sun depending on the cloudy condition. This unique design of PV concentrator is appropriate for field application in tropical countries like Thailand and the region.
