Over a short period in the last decades, the world Photovoltaics market has been growing very fast (the installed module power has multiplied by a factor of 100). On the other hand, the production costs over the same period has been decreased by 75%. The performance monitoring of PV power plants, however, didn’t follow the same development curve and the work on fault detection or performance monitoring didn’t bring a significant number of commercial solutions so far. In the context of cost reduction of the electricity price, fault detection that doesn’t need human intervention on site could be very fruitful. The proposed system is capable of tracing the IV characteristics of a PV-module string in an active power plant, without interrupting the inverter, within between 10 and 100ms, depending on the array layout and module type. Hence limiting the impact on energy production. The IV curve is then interpreted by algorithms which detects an eventual problem. The IV analysis system communicates the state of the PV plant to the operator and indicates its performance level and the type of faults present in the module strings, in order to reduce the cost of maintenance and so exploitation costs.
