The performance ratio (PR) has been used to compare PV modules based on their daily average efficiency but this single criterion is not enough to understand the performance variability between technologies and locations. A PV test platform, commissioned on Maui in February 2016, conducts side-by-side comparison of 10 different PV modules. A new energy rating analysis approach is used to present the first-year performance. PR is separated into current (IP) and voltage (VN) performances. The optical performance is also defined from the short-circuit current. Simple empirical models are used to predict these performance criteria as a function of the irradiation, the main environmental parameter. This method helps visualize the performance differences between PV modules and could lead to a better understanding of the performance variabilities between locations.
