Abstract/Summary:


Diesel Generators (DGs) are the most common power generation source in islands as they are a reliable and well known established technology. However grid operators tend to reduce their dependence on DGs mainly due to their operational cost, typically driven by diesel fuel and preventive maintenance. The usage of renewable energy sources and especially photovoltaic (PV) systems is starting to become widely spread. However problems associated with high penetration of renewables arise such as fluctuation of renewable resources, grid stability and constant renewable reliance on grid availability. These problems are even more difficult to overcome on MW-sized systems due to their control complexity and electrical protection schemes. Hybrid systems consisting of more than one power source such as PV combined with DGs and battery energy storage systems (BESS) are becoming increasingly attractive due to their economic advantages coupled with lower levelized cost of electricity compared to pure DG systems. In this paper, we share our experience on how to reach 100% solar fraction in MW-sized isolated grids using a hybrid system. The real case of the Caribbean island of St. Eustatius is presented and the performance analysis and results gained during the first years of operation are demonstrated.
