Recent progress in the Chinese PV industry will be explained, particularly at Trinasolar. An outlook on cell design leading to the next technology cycle is given. As urgent R&D topics are suggested: how thermal history and injection density affect LeTID degradation of Ga-doped cells; material and processing sequence to produce transparent passivating contacts, both for PERC and TOPCon cells and HJT cells; it is important that the cells and transparent passivating contacts are free of scarce elements such as indium, otherwise the cell type cannot contribute significantly to meeting the Paris Climate Agreement due to planetary boundaries; possibly replacing silver with copper or aluminum is the most urgent task ahead of PV scale-up and much needed CO2 mitigation.
