Sustained public support will prove vital in harnessing the opportunities offered by competitive photovoltaics. Rather than appeal to consumers directly, our project opens the dialogue with their children. Prometeruse takes the form of a citizen science experiment in which teenagers report the carbon footprint of their school and race to reduce it using means that include rooftop photovoltaics. A network of academics active in the energy and climate sciences provide the teachers in our participating schools with course material that draws the link between the technologies tested on campus, the macroeconomic policies enacted by governments and the lifestyle choices made by households. This year, the pilot phase of our project has brought six schools together across France and Germany. Its participants are releasing rare energy consumption data into the public domain, demonstrably improving their grasp of sustainable development and eagerly adopting technologies such as smart meters for their personal use. If such interest can be extended to schools across all 28 Member States, tomorrow’s consumers and taxpayers could make the difference in navigating Europe through its 2050 Energy Roadmap.
