Abstract/Summary:


Plasmonics – collective oscillations of electrons in a conductor are of rapidly increasing interest for photovoltaics, with the ability to manipulate and confine light at the nanoscale opening up new solar cell design possibilities. Progress in harnessing plasmonics for photovoltaics is reviewed, highlighting both the promise and challenges. New applications include an investigation of the use of extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) to allow metals to replace transparent conducting oxides for thin-film solar cells and compact time asymmetric structures. Results are applicable to wafer-based and thin-film cells, as well as to advanced cell concepts.
