Abstract/Summary:


A new backsheet, based on cost effective polyolefins was developed for solar modules. Polyolefins are known to withstand harsh environmental conditions. This polyolefin is especially modified for long term durability. To perform a life time estimate, intensive and long-term weathering tests were performed. The polyolefin backsheet was tested under harsh temperature and UV conditions in the xenon weatherometer and QUV-A. In parallel, heat aging was done at temperatures of 110°C to 170°C. An Arrhenius extrapolation of the time to partial loss of property was done to estimate a service life time. The calculated mean lifetime of the polyolefin based backsheet in a standard solar module can be more than 50 years in Germany. The weathering is ongoing.
