Abstract/Summary:


Aggregated fleets of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) compatible EVs plugged in at longterm parking locations can provide storage services for adjacently located buildings which these parking lots serve. Since both these buildings and the parking spaces themselves can have considerable PV generation, the double use of parked EVs can represent a considerable resource for behind-the-meter storage applications. An airport terminal building is considered with such a parking space covered by a solar array. The operation of the system is simulated to analyse its performance over a year. The results of the analysis reveal that the use of even a small fraction of the available parked vehicles can lead to considerable reduction of the peak electricity demand of the facilities even after the addition of electric vehicle chargepoints. Further, the installation of solar arrays alone at the site of the building is found to reduce the net annual electricity demand of the facility, but has no impact on the total capacity required – onsite storage is needed for that. The use of EVs in V2G mode is found to lead to an overall increase in the energy consumption of the facilities, though this demand can be shifted to off-peak hours.
