Abstract/Summary:


The development of low power concentrators (concentration factors < 10) that do not require sun tracking for their operation could lead to new designs for solar panels that capture the benefits of concentration without the associated costs of sun tracking machinery. A variety of two-dimensional designs for bifacial cells has been produced with concentration factors between 3.0 (thermodynamic limit using bifacial cells and glass with refractive index of 1.5) and up to 4.5 for narrower acceptance angles. They open up possibilities of new designs, reduced costs and increased competitiveness.
