Abstract/Summary:


PV Installations pose a relatively low fire hazard. However, there are several reasons for some PV installations to be involved with fire. The fire risk for in-roof PV installations is 20-times greater than on-roof installations[1]. The PV Laboratory of the Berner Fachhochschule BFH and the Engineering office Muntwyler has worked for decades on the prevention of fires in PV installations [2]. In the last few years, this work has been strengthened with the support of the building insurance company (Gebäudeversicherung Bern GVB) of the state of Berne in Switzerland [3]. With a better safety strategy, several fires created by PV components could be avoided. Such a type of safety strategy was developed by the aircraft industry and is used in the gliding community. The author, an experienced glider pilot, uses this safety strategy for PV installations to improve the safety of PV installations.
