Abstract/Summary:

Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) thin films have recently been raising interest as a basis for thin film solar cells that can provide a high conversion efficiency, thanks to its direct band gap characteristics and high absorption coefficient. In order to improve the efficiency of such devices by reducing the optical losses, we have developed a methodology to build an efficient model for the simulation of the optical properties of CZTSe-CdS-ZnO based solar cells. As a first step, the layers are characterized separately in order to extract their complex refractive index (n,k). Flat layers such as CdS and ZnO are characterized using ellipsometry, while the rough CZTSe layers are analyzed using reflection & transmission measurements. The extracted optical parameters are then used as inputs in a multilayer plane-wave based simulation software. The simulation results are compared to the experimental reflection and transmission spectra and showed a very good match.
