Abstract/Summary:

The encapsulant has so far mostly only been used as inert material, used to attach cover and back sheet to the absorber layer or to passivate the absorber and protect it from degradation Only recently, new technologies are being developed adding functionality to the encapsulant and using it as active material to improve on cell efficiency, aesthetics or power output and lifetime of PV modules. Here we present the concept of adding functionality to solar encapsulants to improve several aspects of (BI)PV modules. Furthermore, we present 3 currently running developments on functional encapsulants using functional nano-pigments to add color, heat blocking or anti-reflective properties to the encapsulant.
