The increasing and capillary diffusion of Photovoltaic installations both of small-average power (1-100 kWp) that wider ones (>100kWp), often localized in rural areas, unfortunately is depicting a peculiar aspect that was underestimated and that is quickly growing: PV module theft! The aim of this paper is to describe PV-Guardian®, an innovative anti-theft system for PV modules, developed by ENEA and put under Italian patent, which will be soon extended outside our country. PV-Guardian consists of a small and thin electronic card, self-powered by the PV module and internally laminated in such a way it cannot be removed without destroying the panel. Thanks to the application of the GPS technology, PV-Guardian constantly checks the geographical coordinates of the site where the panel is located and it compares them with the data stored by the installing operator on the electronic card by wired/wireless operation and PIN-PUK specific security codes. The PV module energy output is promptly and automatically turned-off when a discrepancy is noted between the current sun exposure position of the PV module and its former coded position. This innovative antitheft system doesn't need of the local presence of personnel for surveillance, neither a complex infrastructure devoted to the monitoring. Several prototypes have been, already, developed by the inventors and many outdoor tests are in progress in order to validate the anti theft performance. Some results of this experimental campaign are reported in this work. Contacts are in progress with many national and international companies interested to PV Guardian application and its manufacturing and industrialization.
