Abstract/Summary:

The safety requirements of polymeric PV backsheet include long term durability under environmental conditions, for which the daylight filtered Xenon based UV weathering test (IEC TS 62788-7-2 A3) has been defined as new dedicated test methods, that also considers elevated chamber temperatures and moisture levels regarded typical for application. Pass-/fail criteria are still under discussion as of IEC TC82 WG2 and in this transition period, legacy and ad-hoc UV tests are still in use all over the marketplace, including UVA340, UVB313 and high intensity metal halide (HIUV-M) exposure. This study benchmarks those four UV weathering tests using a selection of 6 polymeric backsheet films with different design. Typical post evaluation analysis, including retention of mechanical properties, discoloration (yellowing) and retained solar reflectivity are conducted and results are set into perspective in view of different backsheet designs.
