Abstract/Summary:


In the on-going pursuit of increasing module reliability and decreasing module costs, EppsteinTechnologies has developed contacfoil®-back, a lightweight and cost efficient backsheet with excellent protection properties. It consists of an aluminium foil and an insulation/embedding layer directly laminated onto it. The aluminium acting as the protection layer contains contact islands, which allow contacting the module circuit without breaking the protection barrier. The insulation/embedding layer becomes adhesive during lamination, thereby forming a stable compound with the other module components. Here we report on the results of qualification tests, performed with the insulation materials as well as with 2x2 modules built with different embedding/insulation layers, each module containing 4 MWT-cells connected in series. The tests aimed at verifying the following: Suitability of the electrical insulation properties of the used material, reliability of the protection properties of the Al-layer as well as of the insulation/embedding layers and the stability under full module current of the contact islands, providing the connection of the module circuit to the outside world. Finally the applicability of this new backsheet in monolithic assembly processes was verified.
