Abstract/Summary:


The gratuitous but volatile availability of fuel is one of the major differences between investments in renewable energies such as photovoltaic (PV) systems and investments in conventional power plants. It is hence decisive to base PV projects on the most reliable assessment of the expectable energy production. Independent yield analyses are consequently requested in funding, tender and selling processes of PV plants. Specialized knowledge and independence are demanded from qualified yield assessor in order to allow a reliable prediction of the expected energy yield. Aspects of meteorology, geology and technology need to be considered for this interdisciplinary task. This article describes state of the art methods, data sources and tools pointing out four key factors for high quality production estimates. In this context also the importance of a clear result presentation and the transparency of critical assumptions are discussed. Overall, this paper is a technical overview as well as a quality guideline for yield studies. It can be helpful in the judgment of different yield reports or as a requirement catalogue for the identification of qualified yield experts. Furthermore interested parties are requested to contribute to a normative process.
