Abstract/Summary:

Several methods to assess glare in an indoor and outdoor environment are reviewed. Furthermore, measurements of the reflection properties of different glass types and other materials used in the building envelope are presented. The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is used to characterize the different materials and to evaluate their potential of creating discomfort glare in combination with reflected sunlight according to different thresholds. The results are used to discuss the applicability of the different thresholds for developing a reliable framework for the classification of reflections. In addition, recommendations for which glass type performs best with respect to glare are given for different situations.
