Abstract/Summary:


Billions of people around the world lack electricity access or experience unpredictable, qualitycompromised electricity supply. Most of these individuals survive in access challenged, isolated settlements of the Global South. Extending electricity to these disadvantaged settlements remains a colossal challenge. Solar photovoltaic solutions have been beneficial in such situations, but the access tier afforded by these solutions leaves a lot to be desired. Recent advances in demand response allow consumer engagement that can be leveraged to improve electricity supply. Effective collaboration can help consumers to share available resources efficiently. However, all consumers may not be motivated to take advantage of this opportunity as individual motivations can affect collaborative decision-making. Some individuals may embrace growth and evade non-gain, while others may approach non-loss and evade the threat. The distribution of motivational orientation may impact the effective gain of adopting demand response. The current work investigated the relationship between demand response and deferred consumption in settlements at the grid-edge, off-grid communities of the Global South, and access-deprived healthcare facilities. The gain in service tier, following the United Nations-mandated and the World Bank-developed ‘Multi-Tier Framework for Measuring Energy Access’, underscores the significance of consumer collaborative consumption to ‘ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all’.
