Abstract/Summary:


The purpose of this work is to evaluate the real impact of a solar PV installation in net-metering scheme on the household economics of a Spanish home located in Madrid, central Spain, with over 1,600 average equivalent sun-hours per year. To that purpose, a 1.5 kWp PV system has been monitored from its installation date in February, 2020. The impact of PV production on consumption, compared to the time before PV, has been assessed, both in terms of energy (kWh) and savings in the monthly electricity bill (€). The work has also taken into account the kWh retail price variations. Year-on-year energy (kWh) savings have reached an average of 48%. Economic (€) savings are in the range of 41%. These significant savings are, however, hindered by the fact that the Spanish netmetering regulation for PV power plants includes aspects that are detrimental for the PV plant owners. On one hand, solar kWh fed by the prosumers into the grid are paid by the utility at an average of 32% lower than the price the prosumer pays for the consumed retail kWh bought to the utility. On the other hand, there is a limit to the amount of solar kWh that can be paid. Every kWh over this limit is given for free. This amounts to 14% of the paid solar kWh.
