Abstract/Summary:


Woc is defined as the difference between the semiconductor band-gap (Eg) and open circuit voltage (Voc) of a solar cell. It has the virtue of being straightforward to determine and can be used to compare the quality of solar cells with different band-gap energies. Here we revisit the fundamental limits to Woc and highlight some pitfalls where it can produce misleading data when applied to solar cells that have relatively low densities of states close to the bandedge; a situation commonly encountered with nanostructures.
