Abstract/Summary:

To enable high penetration of PV and wind turbines sustainably in the grid, we present that the scaling of a physics-based PV simulation framework and its coupling with weather modelling, populations statistics and grid modelling provide unprecedented accuracy in scenario development and balancing studies. In this paper, a methodology to compute the spatio-temporal distribution of the Belgian PV power production using a coupled electrical, optical and thermal PV modelling framework is motivated, explained and validated. A validation of our methodology at both single power plant and country scales report yearly energy yield accuracy between 5 to 15%. The proposed methodology to simulate PV production can now be used to map PV potential at a higher temporal and spatial resolution, and investigate how to balance optimal placement of PV for maximum generation, immediate consumption and reduction of the need for non-intermittent generation at the country level.
