This work aims at describing the status of PV in Italy in correlation with the objectives of the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate (PNIEC) to contribute to energy decarbonization. The PV installations' trend in Italy (0.9 GW installed in 2021) is shown highlighting an encouraging recovery signal after several years of market stagnation. The need for a significant acceleration of the market is underlined comparing the current trend to PNIEC's targets and to the more ambitious goals of the new European climate law's package "fit for 55" (for Italy, 64 GW of cumulative PV power by 2030). Government measures and reforms for an Italian PV market boost are illustrated together with the already consolidated assets of PV industrial sector, covering the entire PV value chain, and of Research, Development and Demonstration activities of research institutes and universities supporting the knowledge advancement and industry innovation. The reported information shows the current Italian policies for the widest penetration of PV in the process of decarbonisation of energy production, but also the need of a further effort by the governmental institutions and all the sector stakeholder to reach the national PV target by 2030. The main work needed in very short term is to put in place and to valorise the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the stronger source of strategic projects for the energy transition which, in Italy, relies largely on the development and diffusion of photovoltaics.
