This paper presents results of a recent PV energy life cycle study, with a focus on the energy payback time achievable with state-of-the-art production chains for conventional mono- and multi-crystalline silicon based modules. The data has been taken directly from state of the art large scale production facilities of leading European manufacturers for metallurgical grade silicon, polysilicon, wafers, cells and modules. As the participating manufacturers represent large market shares in their fields, the data can be regarded as representative for the assessment of crystalline silicon based modules in Europe in general. The resulting energy payback time values between 1 and 1.5 years prove the continuing significant progress in efficient energy and material utilization achievable in PV mass production. Comparisons with former work by other authors are part of the elaboration. The paper does also address potential fields for further improvement in all production steps, based on the detailed data frame of the study.
