Abstract/Summary:


Target of this work is to estimate the extent of yield losses of potential induced degradation (PID) affected PV systems and to compare these with the STC power losses. It is obvious that a PV system which faces a loss of STC power will face at least a yield loss, which often assumed to be in the same range like STC power loss. In fact, the yield loss will be much higher for PID since it has a significantly stronger impact on the performance at low irradiance. This effect becomes relevant already in the initial phase of PID when the STC power is hardly affected. We simulate three PV systems with two different sets of irradiation data for a Mediterranean area (Greece) and a moderate climate (Germany). For the simulation we used PVSyst with a fixed tilted, open rack mounting structure without any shading and weather data from Meteonorm. The PVSyst simulations are resulting in different specific energy production as a function of location and performance of the string. This is further folded with the STC power loss to calculate the total relative energy yield loss of a system which is also a loss in revenue.
