This paper reports, the use of thiophene-based polymer P3HT as hole conducting agent to replace gel electrolyte in ZnO based quasi-solid state dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). P3HT was used as hole conducting polymer for the solid state DSSC of the structure ITO/ZnO/Rose-Bengal/P3HT/Pt (Cell A). A quasi-solid DSSC, ITO/ZnO/Rose-Bengal/Gel-Electrolyte/Pt, (Cell B) was also fabricated using low molecular weight Poly Ethylene Glycol, (Mw 6000, PEG6000) as gel. The cell A delivered an overall power conversion efficiency of ~2.59 % under 100 mW.cm-2 (air mass: 1.5). The cell B generated an overall power conversion efficiency of ~ 5.56 % under similar conditions. Although in DSSCs based on gel electrolyte the efficiency is higher but have problem associated with the sealing problems which limits device stability. The present work reveals that P3HT could act as a good hole conducting agent for solid state DSSCs.
