Abstract/Summary:

Short-term variability is one of the critical challenges to greater penetration of PV into the electricity system. New grid-codes [1], [2] require combining the PV generator with some form of energy storage technology in order to reduce short-term PV power fluctuation. Herein, it is compared through different merit indexes the strategies available in the literature to comply with the maximum allowable ramp-rate limitation imposed by a grid code. This work presents a guide whose aim is to facilitate the election of implementing one control strategy or another and the storage technology to be used. All the strategies have been evaluated over 1-year 5 second power measurements which were recorded at the output of 500 kW inverters at the 38.5 MW Amareleja (Portugal) PV plant for a maximum allowable ramp-rate value of 2%/min.
