The use of solar energy especially for desalination of seawater and refrigeration is well adapted for the Saharan region where the climate is extremely hot, the fresh water is scarce and solar energy potential is high. This paper presents an innovative mechanism reflected in a combination of mechanical vapor compression (MVC) desalination unit and absorption refrigeration machine (ARM) powered by solar Photovoltaic Thermal (PVT) collectors. The idea consists to recover the heat generated by the condenser of cold production machine in order to heat part of the intake seawater and improve the coefficient of performance (COP) of the (ARM). The PVT system provides the electrical energy required by the compressor and thermal energy for cold production and/or to heat the intake seawater. The proposed approach is illustrated using a case study for a typical summer day in the Dakhla city sited at the south of Morocco by using the global model, which includes SOLAR-MVC-ARM models. The influence of the combination on the power consumption and COP of MVC-ARM system powered by solar energy is studied. The results demonstrate that the new system reduces the electric consumption of the compressor and improve the COP of the ARM. Moreover, it is possible to operate the cycle at a low generator temperature. This study testifies that the combining system is efficient compared to each separate systems.
