Sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination units coupled with renewable energy systems (RES) such as photovoltaics and/or wind turbines is a very attractive proposition, especially in remote areas for covering potable water supply shortage. The intermittent energy production of RES, makes the integration of energy storage subsystems necessary, such as conventional battery banks, in order to ensure the shifting of energy. In small scale SWRO desalination systems, an energy buffer with adequate capacity is required to power the system for small time periods of time during the day. Moreover, SWRO desalination units show lower specific energy consumption when the units operate in variable load that in full load mode. Therefore, the utilization of an advanced energy management system for these systems is essential for their operation. This paper presents an autonomous SWRO desalination system powered by PV, including two alternative energy buffers; an electrical (hybrid capacitors) and a hydraulic (pressure vessels) for short term energy storage. A decentralized energy management system (DEMS) was designed and developed for the SWRO desalination system. The proposed EMS was based on multi agent system (MAS) and employed Fuzzy Cognitive Maps for its implementation. The experimental results, obtained from the application of the proposed MAS – DEMS, showed that the continuous and efficient operation of the desalination unit was ensured.
