Abstract/Summary:


Micro cracks are a well-known problem of photovoltaic cells. Different techniques are applied to identify damaged cells. We have developed a portable, lightweight and economical Photoluminescence Outdoor Measure-ment System (PLOMS). This system allows the detection of micro cracks on installed PV modules without switching off, demounting or rewiring the solar plant. It is designed to work on standard glass-foil modules but as well on bifacial glass-glass modules on sunny days. PLOMS has been compared to electroluminescence imaging and had been tested under real conditions on a solar test installation in the Swiss Alps. The PLOMS revealed high resolution photolumi-nescence images of PV modules in operation and guaranteed detection of failures such as micro cracks of installed solar plants, which simplifies the maintenance work.
