The non-linearity of PV reference cells can be determined by the two-lamp method according to IEC 60904-10. However, the data so obtained only give a series of local non-linearities, i.e. between two irradiance levels differing by a factor of two. Here a scheme is presented on how to obtain the global non-linearity from these measurements over a much larger irradiance range. Essentially, the local non-linearities are added for neighbouring irradiance ranges, using suitable interpolation to obtain intermediate data points. The method is illustrated with measurements of a PV reference cell for which all local non-linearities are well below 1% whereas the global non-linearity from 25 W/m2 to 1000 W/m2 is almost 3%. It is recommended that this methodology be considered in the next revision of IEC 60904-10.
