Abstract/Summary:

For meeting the goals of the European Union Climate Policy, many member-states are designing policies to allow an increased number of electric powered cars. The intention is the de-carbonisation of transport, a sector which contributes to about 30% of Europe’s GHG emissions. As the energy sector is more and more decarbonised by renewables, and the building sector makes huge efforts to reduce consumption, the relative weight of GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions from transport will increase. A higher share of electric cars in the European fleet can reduce the GHG balance of transport, but only when the additional electricity requirement will be supplied by renewable electricity. Compared to all renewables, PV electricity can deliver some significant benefits. This paper is aiming to estimate the potential of additional PV deployment for electric car charging, assuming a policy coupling between purchase of the electric vehicle together with an appropriate quantity of a PV system, and e determined date to phase out cars driven by internal combustion engines (ICE).
