Abstract/Summary:


This paper presents design considerations and results for a grid-tied solar system installed at the electrical engineering building (S-Block) of the Vaal University of Technology in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa. Design considerations include the choice of inverter, solar panels as well as the arrangement and mounting of the solar panels. Results presented illustrate the effect of the solar system for different scenarios, compared to electricity usage from the grid before the installation of the solar system. These results are in the form of load readings taken on completely sunny and cloudy days as well as for summer vs winter conditions. The influence of the solar system and subsequent electricity savings are assessed, and found to be considerable, and completely economically viable.
