This study examined the renewable energy status of some offshore and outlying islands of Taiwan. We used the hourly power generation data of the Kinmen, Penghu, and Cimei islands for 2018 as well as data from national energy projects in Taiwan to analyze the progress of renewable energy development on Taiwan’s islands. Different system designs were developed for these islands according to various parameters, such as the islands’ surface area, population, and distance from Taiwan. Moreover, the power consumption of the aforementioned islands was found to be different in the summer and winter primarily due to differences in tourist inflow. We compared the renewable energy systems designed for different islands of Taiwan, such as Kinmen (population of approximately 140,000), Penghu (population of approximately 96,000), Dongjiyu (population of approximately 200), and Cimei (population of approximately 3,700). We also investigated the various equipment used for electricity stabilization, such as undersea cables, storage systems, and smart grid systems. Some special cases of renewable energy generation, such as the geothermal power plant constructed on Green Island, were also examined.
