Abstract/Summary:


The electrical energy generated by photovoltaics (PV) contributes significantly to the transition to green energy production. This publication deals with a regional hydrogen storage concept for using PV yields in the commercial sector using the example of a PV carport system with battery and charging station operation at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld, Trier University of Applied Sciences, in Germany. The PV system has a total capacity of 729.6 kWp. It is investigated whether the PV carport system with charging column operation can be realized economically. In addition, the expenses for a future without the construction and operation of the facilities is calculated, which consist only of grid purchase costs. If these are greater than the expenses of the solar carports, the investment is economically advantageous. Subsequently, the concept is complemented by a hydrogen electrolysis plant, hydrogen storage and a fuel cell to convert and store surplus PV electricity into hydrogen.
