As in many European countries, deployment of low carbon technologies (LCTs) in the form of distributed photovoltaics (PV), electric vehicles (EVs), and heat pumps (HPs) across Great Britain (GB) is projected to increase rapidly over coming years, driven by falling costs and commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Without network upgrades or increased system flexibility, higher distributed generation and loads associated with these technologies are expected to overload some local networks. However, the extent of this overloading, which networks are most susceptible, and most appropriate means of avoiding adverse impacts by context, all remain unclear.
