Abstract/Summary:


The world is forwarding its initial steps towards providing sustainable energy solutions to humankind on this planet by adopting renewable energy resources such as solar power energy to generate electricity. This adoption helps us provide clean and secure energy to everyone and low-carbon emission to meet the climate crisis globally. We can see day- day growth in the photovoltaic (PV) installation capacity worldwide, as it was reached 633 GW last year and is expected to reach 1TW by the year, 2022. In contrast, some significant challenges related to this end-of-life (EOL) PV waste modules will emerge in the coming next decade. It is expected that by 2030, there will be a total of 8 million tonnes (Mt) of a cumulative mass of EOL PV panels, and this is projected to approach 80 Mt by 2050, which is going to exceed 10% of global electronic waste (e-waste). IRENA, 2016 report it, there are specific opportunities related to this waste stream, if it deals with appropriate waste management procedures. Although, well-established regulations framework is already introduced by the developed nations such as European countries, USA, Japan and South Korea by introducing a WEEE policy directive for EOL PV waste treatment, such as establishing recycling facilities. On the contrary, developing nations such as China, India, Sub-Saharan Africa and Brazil are far behind in introducing EOL PV waste management.
